AC Podcast #132 features an interview with Seth Godin on his new book Tribes: We Need You To Lead Us. In the interview Seth explains why everyone is now a leader and challenges us to stop defending the status-quo and to start doing something remarkable.
A few of my favorite quotes from the interview include:
“The system wants you to be mediocre.”
“The enemy is not piracy, the enemy is obscurity.” (quoting Tim O’Reilly)
“You are rooting for yourself.”

So…have you read the book? What do you think? How do you plan to apply it?
Seth puts this well…. We are all leaders, and should begin to see ourselves as leaders, regardless of what level where we are on within the organization and our community. This is particularly true for the creative pro. Leadership is about influence.
Excellent book & interview!
@Andre, Agreed. That was the big learning for me as well (as spelled out in this week’s AC Premium podcast.) Although it sounds obvious, I was put “on alert” that we are all leading at every given moment and that this carries with it a responsibility to be “follow-worthy.”
I loved this interview and the book. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention.
Great interview! And it looks Starbucks is listening, and trying to court the iPhone tribe… http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/internet/wifi.jsp
I’m in the middle of this book and can barely put it down to work. So far my fav quote from Seth is “Life is to short to make mediocore things” & “leaders have followers, managers have employees”…can’t wait to finish.
@Devin, I loved those too. There’s a Tribes manifesto on Change This that has some good content. (It’s mostly from the latter part of the book.)
Loved the book and read it in an afternoon of commuting to and fro. I loved what he said about choices. We can either REACT, or RESPOND or INITIATE. And leaders initiate. Our choice. I see that I can initiate my daily actions, that how I spend my creative time can be one of these three options. Initiating action is the most powerful and puts me in control of my day. Instead of reacting and responding to my email inbox, I can turn to the project at hand with authority and confidence. I lead by being creative.
I just finished Seth’s book last night. Wow. Thanks for the recommendation. The insert about Seth checking his email at 3AM while on vacation & not looking at it as work was amazing to me. I seem to always be yearning for my next vacation rather, than filling my days with the same passion that I have during those 2 weeks. Thanks for the motivation to look at my life, & chances to lead, from a different angle.
Thank you for great interview, Seth Godin helped us to possition our business as the best in our world. Now when economy is down we reap the results.
